NIST SP 800-171 Compliance (National Institute of Standards and Technology)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded in 1901 by Congress to remove obstacles in US manufacturing competition. It intersects with business cybersecurity when it comes to NIST Special Publication 800 – 171 “Protecting Controlled Unclassified Information in Non-federal Information Systems and Organizations.”

The NIST Cybersecurity Framework helps businesses of all sizes better understand, manage, and reduce their cybersecurity risk and protect their networks and data.

With NIST 800 – 171, it’s the Contractor and Subcontractor’s responsibility to safeguard all data and information related to any work performed for the DoD, including:

  • Information that would be described as controlled unclassified information (CUI)
  • Covered defense information (CDI)

Any organization that processes or stores sensitive, unclassified information on behalf of the US government is required to be compliant with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Special Publication 800-171 (NIST SP 800-171) cybersecurity standards.

If your organization does business with the government as a Contractor or Subcontractor, you are required to meet the guidelines outlined in NIST 800-171.

Failure to comply with the NIST Regulation can result in:

  • Termination of Contract(s) / Subcontract(s)
  • No longer being Qualified for Contracts/Awards

Please see the below links and resources for information on how to become NIST Compliant.
